Birds on the Camino
We have seen many beautiful churches and some gorgeous scenery. One of our passions, thanks to our son and his wife, Evan and Jen, are birds. We have an app called MERLIN and all we have to do is press the microphone and Merlin will listen to the bird songs nearby and identify the birds! Listed below are most of the birds we’ve seen or heard along the Camino.
We saw a few big birds, eagles or kites as we walked over the Pyrenees. The other little birds join us all along the track. The European Stonechat is everywhere in the wheat and corn and grape fields. We’ve also spotted the Black Redstart and Cetti’s Warbler often as well.
We heard the European Greenfinch a couple of times today between Sahagun and El Burgo Ranero, on our our seventh day on the Meseta. We still haven’t spotted him closely, he’s in the shrubs that line our path.
God has created so many diverse, beautiful things for us to appreciate and be thankful for, don’t you think?

Very cool – what a beautiful assortment of birds to familiarize yourselves with along the route! I was wondering if you’d be seeing/hearing any Hoopoes, but maybe they’ve migrated south already.
And don’t let anyone tell you you’re dumpy, Cetti’s Warbler! 😂
Thank you Jen! It has been so fun looking around and listening! And warblers are not dumpy!!!
You’ve taught us well!
Love the birds!!! Thanks for compiling this list, a bunch of lifers for you along your journey on the Camino!
