Camino Day Two- Roncesvalles to Zubiri (13.7 Miles)
We awoke late at 7:30 after a very restless night, our bodies were sore. We begin walking at 8:45 after spending some time in the Chapel of Santiago praying for our nephew. The majority of today’s hike was through Boxwood and Pine Forest. We had never seen wild Boxwood (some of our hedges in Woodinville are Boxwood). About half way on our 12.5 mile hike the rain decided to pay us a visit and we walked the last three hours in the rain. The rain was ok, what was not was the last mile down a rock ravine of shale rock and clay soils. We did fine, slow but fine, but many Pilgrims really struggled in the wet conditions.
We arrived in Zubiri at 3:15 and checked into a very lovely 8 room hotel. After showers and pack organizing we headed over to the St. Stephen Church for a Pilgrim Blessing but were also able to attend Mass since a fellow pilgrim, a priest from Boston, said Mass in English. We hung out in our room for an hour plus until dinner reservations at a nearby hosteria and our first Pilgrim Meal. The Pilgrim Meal entails a three course meal, water, and wine for a very reasonable price of 18 euros each.
Hopefully a good night sleep tonight and an early start as we head into Pamplona.

I have a close friend who is an antiques dealer in Pamplona. His name is Javier Cia (no, he doesn’t work for the Christians In Action in Langley, Virginia). The name of his shop is Antiguedades Miqueleiz in Calle Roncesvalles 11.
Stop by if you have time.
I forgot to mention that “Voltarén” analgesic cream is the best thing ever for sore and aching muscles. Put it on before bed, and you’ll feel MUCH better in the morning. You can pick it up at any Spanish pharmacy.
